Moravian Christingle Services

The Moravian Churches in Nunatsiavut celebrate Christingle Services tomorrow, Christmas Eve in Happy Valley, Makkovik and Hopedale, just as the Nain Moravian Church will.

We have announced the Nain Moravian Christingle Service, so here is how the Happy Valley Church will celebrate and for information, we contacted Amos Lyall, a Chapel Servant.

He says one service will be at 4:00 p.m. And the other at 7:00 p.m..

Lyall says they hold two separate Christingle Services because a lot of people go to Church on that special occasion, even though they are not of a regular Moravian congregation. The people like to observe the special Christingle Service.

Seven Church Servants will serve apples with candles on them to all the children, while Sabina Hunter conducts both Services.

The Chapel Servants shop for apples from the North Mart and the Co-op and the apples are sold to them at a discount.

The Moravian Church provides the candles.

In Makkovik, the Chapel Servants decorate the Church for Christmas today at 2:00 p.m.

For information, we contacted Mary Ola Andersen, the Acolyte.

She informs us that a Christingle Service will be at 4:00 p.m. December 24th during a bi-lingual service. After the benediction, she says Santa Clause will visit the children and recieve a gift.

December 25th, she says, will see an Inuktitut Service at 10:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m. English Service and at 4:00 p.m., a bilingual service.

Andersen says on Children's Festival Day on 28th December, there will be a love feast for the children and adds that the service will also be a family church service.

In Hopedale, the Christingle service will be held at 2:00 p.m. And the other at 4:00 p.m. For information, we contacted Rev. Brian Burrows an Anglican Minister helping the Moravian Church.

He says the community is divided into two as well, because their church is too small to hold the whole population of the Community.

Burrows informs us six chapel servants will serve the children, along with Gustav Boase and Amos Onalik.

Rev. Burrows will conduct the two services on December 24th, 2008.

Labrador Correctional Centre Christingle

Not only does the children of the Moravian Churches in Nunatsiavut attend a Christingle Services.

The inmates of the Labrador Correctional Centre will be treated to a Christingle Service this afternoon.

For information about this event, we contacted Regula Shule of Happy Valley Goose Bay.

Shule is the Acolyte of the Moravian Church.

She informs us that at 2:30 p.m., fifty one inmates will recieve an apple with a candle on it.

Shule says most everyone like to recieve the apple and the candle.

Beatrice Hope will hold a short sermon during the service.

Hope is training to become a minister of the Moravian Church.

Shule says Rose Pamak and Emelia Kajui will read the gospel in Inuktitut, and Carl Sonnichen will read and provide music.

She says Sara Ponniuk has all the apples and candles ready for inmates at the Christingle service.

Interesting to note what Shule says next - she recieves candles from Switzerland each year and those candles will be what the inmates recieve.
