Residential Schooling

In a letter from the law firm Ahlstrom Wright Oliver & Cooper, that went out to Residential School survivors and the Nunatsiavut Government , there was a section stating:

"The Nunatsiavut Government has indicated that they will come on board if the application to have the schools added to the list fails, which appears to have occurred.”

This morning we contacted Tim McNeil, the N.G. minister of education and economic development, asking him on how they'll work with the law firm.

Any new standpoint surrounding the N.G. and residential schooling, “there is really nothing new to announce from our end.” he says.

The only thing that can be provided, is that back in May of 2008, we had submitted a list of schools to the Government of Canada to be added.” says McNeil.

In regards of what was stated by the law firm surrounding the N.G. coming on board, he says “the list never failed, and that we are still waiting for a response from the Federal Government.”

If they do receive a rejection letter, McNeil says “we will decide on how we will work with Ahlstrom Wright Oliver & Cooper's law firm, and we will certainly provide helpful information to the law firm.”

Until the N.G. receives any response from the Federal Government, we will keep looking for any updates, especially this one!

Candle Light Services

With Christmas Eve just two days away, the Moravian Churches in Labrador will be busy getting ready for their traditional Candle Services.

This is the time when the Moravian Churches hold their Annual Christmas Eve Candle Light Services. Children, ages 15 years to new born, will get either an apple and a candle, or a raisin bun and a candle, depending on which community they are from.

Traditionally, the apple or bun signifys the world, and the candle Jesus Christ, the light of the world.

In the community of Nain, the Moravian Church visits businesses asking for donations, or a discount on apples and round milk biscuits.

On Christmas Eve morning, the Chapel-servants and their helpers, along with some of the church elders, will be putting candles on four hundred to four hundred and fifty apples.

With the ever growing population in Nain, the church receives more people attending than what they have seats, resulting in having two Candle Light Services.

This year, the lower part of Nain will have their candle service at 4 PM and the upper part will have their service at 7 PM.
