Earlier this month, OK radio reported on an event the Labrador Interpretation Centre was planning on holding in North West River on December 15th.
The event was called “The Spirit of Real Giving” and according to organizer Mina Campbell-Hibbs, it was a great success.
To see how this interesting event turned out, we spoke with Campbell Hibbs again today.
She says all of her guest speakers and singers went ahead as planned and after it was all over, they all went upstairs for tea and treats.
Cora Edmunds is one of the Leaders, along with Joan Goudie.
She says after the new year they've decided to hold their meetings every second week.
During the gatherings, one or two of the six women rotate the leadership role.
Edmunds says Goudie is responsible for activities, finances and programs for the community.
In 2009, the group hopes to start including the whole community, adding their group's mandate is to encourage children and young women to lead a more meaningful lifestyle.
She says they try to influence the young people to pursue careers of their choice and build up self-esteem, instead of using alcohol and drugs which would ruin their lives in terms of building a good life for themselves.
Edmunds says she's begun to find that the young women pay more attention and are more interested when a professional comes to town than just the coordinators of the group.
So the group tries to get outside professionals to come in when they obtain funds for certain projects and they still hope to have someone from Goose Bay come to help some weekend to help with their scrap-books and photo project.
So we contacted Makkovik and Postville before air-time today.
Carol Gear of Makkovik coordinates the Christmas Hamper drive in their community.
But what they do is compile donations of money and make out gift certificates for needy families.
She says with help from Health Services, the Clinic Staff and Child, Youth and Family Services they determine who and how many people will get hampers.
Fifty-one people will be getting their gift certificates today and they can pick them up from the Nunatsiavut Government office in Makkovik this afternoon.
Some of the donations came from the Nunatsiavut Government, Nunatsiavut Department of Health and Social Development, the Makkovik Inuit Community Government, Aurora Energy and Vale Inco.
In Postville, the Postville Inuit Community Government Office takes care of the hamper drive.
They too collect money and give out food vouchers.
This year they have 32 gift vouchers for people in Postville and they will be putting them in the mail today.
Donations for their vouchers came from the Torngat Fish Producers Co-operative, the Nunatsiavut Government, Department of Health and Social Development, and Aurora Energy.
