International Women's Day

Women from all over the world are celebrating International Women’s Day tomorrow.

In 1908, 15,000 women marched through the streets of New York City demanding shorter work hours, better pay and voting rights.

And in 1911 the first official celebration of International Women’s Day took place.

And each year women in Canada also celebrate in their own way.

In Happy Valley-Goose Bay the Mokami Status of Women held a luncheon on Wednesday, March 5th.

We were unable to find out if any events were held in Nunatsiavut Towns.

Residential Schools Update

The Nunatsiavut Government submitted an application to the Federal Government to have Labrador schools on the list for compensation.

Tim McNeil is Deputy Minister of Education and Economic Development for Nunatsiavut Government.

He says NG received a response and was informed by the Government of Canada a short while ago that Labrador Schools are not included.

Although the Federal Government accepted some responsiblity that some federal funds flowed to some schools in Labrador, it also said that it was not involved directly in operation and management of schools.

McNeil says NG is NOT satisfied with the response but has provided additional information to verify and clarify their submission.

He says when the Federal Government responds to that additional information NG will decide its next move.

McNeil says the Class Action Suit being put forward by Ahlstrom Wright Oliver and Cooper is still continuing.

Rigolet Skidoo Investigation

There has been three skidoos exploding and then catching fire in Rigolet.

Transport Canada and the snowmobile manufacturer, BRP, of Valcourt, Quebec are investigating the matter.

Johanne Denault is Manager of Communications for BRP.

She says that she can only report that there is an active

investigation and it is not known yet what caused the explosions.

The skidoos involved are the 2007 and 2008 Skandic SWT V-800 and Expedition SUV SDI 600.

The skidoo explosions all happened in Rigolet within the last month.

In a media advisory issued on February 29th Transport Canada recommends that these type of vehicles be parked and not started until there is an adequate understanding of the explosions and fires.

Sarah Webb

Yesterday we spoke with Jim Nui of Natuashish about why hockey teams from his Town are not participating at the 8th annual Bernard & Jeffrey Webb Memorial Hockey Tournament in Nain.

He said that there were several reasons for their non-participation.

One major reason he said was that last year,  some Innu players staying at the Atsanik Lodge had done a lot of damage to the hotel, and because of that they were barred from staying there.

Nui also mentioned that some outstanding bills were not paid to the Lodge by some sponsors of the Natuashish team.

He also said Natuashish teams are not playing this weekend because they’ve made other plans.

We also spoke with the Manager of Atsanik Lodge, Sarah Webb this morning to get the other side of the story.

The Hockey Tournament starts this evening at Husky Center at 6pm, and 4 Nain Teams have registered.

At 12:30 pm we were informed by the Recreation Director in Nain that a Bantam Midget team from Natuashsish is enroute to Nain by skidoos to participate in the tournament.

Federal Budget Announced

A Northern Allowance Deduction payment increase was the only good news that came out from the Federal Government Budget announced recently.

Todd Russell is the Member of Parliament for Labrador.

He says he is disappointed in this budget, because there are only dribs and drabs of monies for the people of Labrador.

He says the Federal Government is aware of housing needs, but there are no additional funds to construct more homes.

Russell says the fishery is also a major issue, but there is no support for the fisherpersons on the north coast.

And according to the Federal Government they have decided to change the EI system and set up a separate Crown Corporation.
