There are 2 dog team races taking place this month in Rigolet.
Richard Rich is helping to organize the events.
He says the first is the Levi Pottle Memorial race, which will take place on March 15th.
He is unsure of how many teams will take part in this race.
But adds that first prize is $750, plus a Hubert Groves Memorial Award and an extra $200, second is $350 and for third place is $200.
All cash prizes are sponsored by the Royal Canadian Legion in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.
Rich says that the 30th Annual Heritage Dog Team Race will take place on March 22nd.
He says to date there are 16 teams registered for the race,
Four of the teams are from Rigolet, 4 teams from Makkovik, 1 team from Hopedale, 1 from
Rich says the prizes are as follows:
1st place receives a cash award of $2007
2nd place receives $1500 cash.
3rd place receives $1000 cash.
He adds that there are also cash prizes for 4th and 5th place as well a cash prize of $400 for the best looking dog team.
The 8th Annual Bernard & Jeffrey Webb Memorial Hockey Tournament is taking place on March 7th-9th.
There will also be a CYN Annual Hockey Tournament. The date is yet to be determined.
Both events include cash prizes.
Easter Games takes place in Nain on March 22nd-28th.
In Hopedale, the 7th Annual Opposite Sex Beauty Contest will take place on March 27th. You have to be 5 years or older to participate.
The UjagaKutet Recreation Committee will be holding a Flea Market, Bingo and sales of and 50/50 tickets on March 8th. Fee for a table is $10.
Also, there will be a Mixed Doubles Table Tennis Tournament for ages 16 and older in Hopedale. The fee is $10 per couple. Please sign up by Friday, March 7th by 5pm.
In Makkovik, the Easter Games are scheduled for the community on March 22nd-24th.
In Postville, there was a 3rd Annual Carl Sheppard Ball Hockey tournament this weekend. There were 5 teams: 3 from Postville and 2 from Makkovik. Prizes included T-shirts and hoodies. The Silent Assassins from Makkovik placed first, 2nd place were Tsunami from Postville, and the
Recreation Director, Jenelle Gear, says that there are also events such as mini-volley ball and floor hockey tournaments scheduled for the community.
In Rigolet, the Tikigâtsuk Cultural Festival is taking place on March 13th to 15th.
The members of the Ulapitsaijet Volunteer Committee in Nain are interested in having more members join.
Carla Pamak is the new Chair of the Committee.
She says they held their Annual General Meeting on Monday night.
Pamak says Isabel Pain was elected the Secretary/Treasurer.
And that the group reviewed financial statements for 2007/2008 fiscal year.
Pamak say the group is planning to have a “Celebrate Life” celebrations in May.
The Ulapitsaijet Trust Committee meets every two weeks.
The next regular meeting of Ulapitsaijet is scheduled for March 19th, 2008.
At that time, they will go through new proposals for funding.
The Women’s Retreat will be held in TikKuatukKak on March 25th to 29th.
Tracy Ann Evans is the Coordinator for Status of Women for Nunatsiavut Government.
Evans says two women from Nain, Hopedale, Postville, Makkovik and Rigolet are attending and one each from
She says they have not made a choice on who will be the guide or bear monitor.
