Nain Inuit Community Government Update

There are two water lines freeze ups plus two sewer line freeze-ups in Nain.

Sarah Erickson is the AngajukKâk of the Nain Inuit Community Government.

She says their regular Maintenance Services staff, along with five other people are working on the problem.

They’ve had water problems to deal with since early January.

Erickson says the Nain IC Government is still within its operating budget because they’ve made allowances for any over-time work if required.

NICG is hiring residents who need more hours to qualify for Employment Insurance through Make Work projects.

Erickson says they’ve borrowed a Steam Ginny from the Makkovik Inuit Community Government to thaw out freeze ups in Town.

She says there are two leaks in Town and she says hopefully they will have completed the repairs this week.

After all the repairs, the NICG will have to find proper equipment to fill up the holes.

They will use land-fill from the rock quarry at the dump.

Barge Update

There has not been a winter surveillance for awhile on the barge which ran aground in the north.

Roger MacDonald is the Superintendent of the Environmental Response Team in St. John’s, Nfld.

He says the last word received from the Nunatsiavut Government was that the barge is still covered over in ice near Hebron.

He says interested parties are meeting in three weeks to determine whether any pollution was caused over the winter.

The parties being Nunatsiavut Government, MacNally Olympics Construction, Environment Canada, Canadian Coast Guard and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

The barge was carrying 90,000 litres of diesel fuel and 20,000 litres of waste fuel when it ran aground last fall.

A survey will be conducted in the Hebron area to see if  migratory birds were impacted.

To date, the Nunatsiavut Government has not reported any changes to the barge situation over the winter months.
