Women's Craft Workshop

There is a 4 week Craft Workshop offered to women along the coast from February 18th to March 10th.

Amalia Tuglavina is Community Development Officer in Makkovik.

She says they have materials such as sealskin, leather, moose-hide and rabbit fur to make craft items.

The women participating will make slippers, mitts and any other craft they wish to make.

Tuglavina says 60% of the funds were received from Innovative Trade & Rural Development, while the other 40% came from local Trust Committees from participating communities.

She adds that she is waiting for confirmation from Rigolet to see if their Trust Committee will also contribute to this project.

Anyone who wants to participate should sign up by February 14th.

And a few instructors for the Workshop have been found from some of the communities already.

Tuglavina says that this is a pilot project and hopes that the interest is high.

She adds if all goes well this time around, the Craft Workshops will be offered again next year.

Land Transfers to ICG's

Another step toward the implementation of self-government took place at a ceremony in Goose Bay on February 6th.

The Government of Newfoundland & Labrador transferred provincial Crown Land within municipal boundaries to Inuit Community Governments.

This is a requirement of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement.

Toby Andersen is Deputy Minister of Nunatsiavut Affairs and Director of Implementation.

He says what this means is that any Crown Land currently leased by the province and land that is not under a grant is now transferred to Inuit Community Governments.

And from now on any business, individual or company who want to acquire land within municipal boundaries must deal with ICG’s.

Judy Dicker is AngajukKâk of the Hopedale Inuit Community Government.

She says that in Hopedale’s case the transfer of land is delayed.

She confirms that transfer of land will happen in Hopedale when environmental concerns are addressed by the province.

The land transfer ceremony was attended by Provincial Ministers, Nunatsiavut Ministers and all AngajukKâks in Nunatsiavut Towns.

Influenza Vaccine

Every year, people get infected with the influenza virus during the winter months.

And there is a vaccine to prevent the severeness of the illness.

Dr. Maureen Baikie is a Medical Officer of Health at the Labrador Grenfell Health Centre.

She says people who get the vaccine do not get the illness so severely as those who hadn’t received it.

Dr. Baikie says people with heart conditions, diabetes, and chronically ill with pneumonia are among the high risk group.

So are children from ages three months to twenty-three months.

She says next year, Health Labrador would like to add two more groups of people to have the vaccine.

Elderly people living with those on the high risk category and women who are pregnant.
